Giraffe ecology, behavior & conservation research -

The Serengeti giraffe project, initiated in 2008, is a research project that aims to advance our understanding of the ecology and behavior of one of the world’s most charismatic species.  The project is based in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to the great wildebeest migration.

Serengeti has historically been a hub of giraffe research and the Serengeti giraffe project builds upon and adds to this strong foundation.

With giraffe numbers dropping across Africa, it is critical that researchers develop effective monitoring and conservation tools for the species.  The Serengeti giraffe project is dedicated to contributing to this effort.

The giraffe is the national symbol of Tanzania.  We collaborate with the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute and Tanzania National Parks to study and protect this elegant animal and its home, the invaluable Serengeti ecosystem.
